Gareth Thomas

Over the past 10 years, Gareth Thomas has earned the reputation of being a world-class endurance coach & athletic consultant. With his experience in advanced fitness and coaching skills, sports psychology and nutrition, and sports science, Gareth brings a tremendous wealth of knowledge and expertise to UCLA Triathlon. As an Ironman Triathlete and former member of Team Great Britain at the World Long Distance Championships, Gareth has a personal understanding of what it takes to perform. He couples this with a highly technical understanding of the science and practicalities of training. He is regarded as the leading authority on blood lactate and it's application to endurance athletes.

Gareth believes that everyone is an athlete and the techniques used to train the finest athletes in the world are equally applicable to the newcomer. UCLA Triathlon welcomes athletes of all abilities and from all other sports. In addition to the UCLA Triathlon Team, he is head Coach of the Los Angeles Team in Training Ironman Team. Furthermore, Gareth writes & lectures extensively on the development of the endurance athlete and has contributed to and been featured in Triathlete Magazine, Active.com, Xtri.com, Competitor Magazine, Outside Magazine and others.

Marcus George

Marcus George founded the UCLA Triathlon Team with a couple friends in 2001 and served as its president until 2006, when he graduated with his Masters in Aerospace Engineering. He also founded the UCLA IronBruin Triathlon, a sprint-distance race currently in its 4th year. Marcus has been one of the leading forces in the growth and development of the sport at the collegiate level. Marcus is a founder of the West Coast Collegiate Triathlon Conference (WCCTC), the first collegiate triathlon conference in the nation. With the growth of collegiate triathlon, the WCCTC has become a model for the emerging national conference system. Marcus currently works with the sport’s governing body as the Western Region Collegiate Representative and is responsible for growth and development of the sport in California, Hawaii, Arizona, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska.

Marcus has been involved in endurance sports all his life. In high school he was a multi-time provincial champion in the 1500m and 3000m running events, placing 4th in the Canadian National Championships in the 3000m. Marcus became involved in triathlon while attending college at UCLA. He is a multi-time Canadian National Championship podium finisher in his age group and competed with the Canadian National Team at the ITU Age Group World Championships in Hawaii. He also competes as a Cat. 2 cyclist. In the future he hopes to complete an Ironman-distance triathlon and qualify for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. Marcus currently works as a Satellite Control Analysis Engineer at The Aerospace Corporation and lives in Manhattan Beach, CA.
